Trumpet & cornet

Trumpet is probably the most popular brass instrument - most children's first experience of brass is through trumpet or cornet. A wonderfully versatile instrument, with a huge range of music written for it - from classical to jazz, swing, pop, soul, funk - trumpet has a beautiful, bright sound, and plays in the orchestra, in jazz bands, brass ensembles, brass bands, in brass sections supporting pop singers, and as solo instruments.

As with all brass instruments, trumpet needs a bit of 'puff' to play, so is best for slightly older beginners - we'd recommend starting from around 7 years or upwards. Some young beginners find cornet an easier option to start, as it's a slightly more compact instrument, but the range is more limited.

A good quality starter trumpet or cornet will cost in the region of £120, and maintenance is relatively minimal. Hiring a trumpet or cornet is also an option. We are very happy to advise you on buying and hiring options in South London – contact us here
