Flute

Flute is one of the most popular orchestral, chamber and solo instruments, its beautiful treble tones often clearly heard soaring above the orchestra. A wide range of music is written for flute, and, as well as orchestras, you'll find flutes in chamber groups, wind ensembles, jazz groups, in backing sections for pop bands, and playing in duos with piano and other instruments. Flute music can be classical, but can also be pop, contemporary, jazz. Flutes can even be used with the human voice as a rhythmic instrument in flute-boxing, as heard in The Prodigy and Asian Dub Foundation's work.

For beginners, flute is suited to slightly older children who have sufficient 'puff' and are able to manage its weight. We'd generally advise considering starting from around age 8/9 years upwards. For younger students, a special fitting known as a curved head joint or headend will make a full-size flute more manageable in length for shorter arms. For even younger students keen to progress to the flute, a good initial approach would be to learn fife, which teaches the transverse playing position and is easy for manage for the youngest students.

Flutes are moderately priced, and hiring is an option worth considering for young beginners, especially if a head joint is needed. We are very happy to advise you on buying and hiring options in South London – contact us here
