Clarinet

The clarinet is the most popular instrument in the wind family. It has a warm, rich, sound and a wide range. A huge variety of music has been written for the clarinet, from classical, to jazz, to pop, to funk, to folk. In classical music, clarinets form a vital part of the wind section in the orchestra, as well as appearing in smaller wind groups and chamber groups, and as solo instruments. Mozart wrote wonderful clarinet music - his magical Clarinet Concerto in A is below. Clarinets are huge in jazz and pop music too. Very versatile instruments, relatively easy to get started on, and as an introduction to other wind instruments.

We'd recommend starting clarinet from around 6 years upwards. Instruments are reasonably affordable, and smaller size instruments are available for the youngest students, e.g. a Kinder-Klari or Lyons C. Like all reed instruments, the clarinet's reed needs careful maintenance.
